Parkinson’s patients benefit from the dopaminergic medicines not only while they are awake, but also during the sleep. To sleep well, one needs dopamine and this is exactly the substance that Parkinson’s patients are lacking. If they do not take medication that covers the night, they will not be able to sleep well and will struggle with waking up during the night several times. People with parkinsonism can also be very stiff and slow during the night, making it difficult to turn around in bed. There are dopaminergic medicines that have a long duration of action, and therefore can be used to achieve a good night's sleep. Also, it may be useful to take extra medication at night if someone is stiff, wakes up during the night repeatedly and has troubles falling back asleep.
