CHEM Director participates in the Luxembourg Parkinson Study as a control subject

The Luxembourg Parkinson Study is searching to recruit around 800 Patients as well as 800 control subjects that do not have Parkinson’s disease.

Yesterday, Dr Michel Nathan, the director of the Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM), volunteered as a control subject and participated in a three-hour examination, showing the great commitment of his hospital to research.

“Supporting a study of such a high quality and international reputation is a matter close to my heart. Given the fact that its success depends on the participation of a high number of patients as well as control subjects, I hope that many participants, particularly as many CHEM employees as possible, will participate in the study and thus contribute to the progress of scientific research”, explained Dr Nathan.

Since September 2016, the CHEM has been actively supporting the NCER-PD research programme by providing dedicated rooms within its premises. This makes it possible for participants from the South of the country to be examined in Esch-sur-Alzette and thus avoid travelling all the way to the Parkinson’s Research Clinic in Luxembourg city. This is how Dr Nathan could easily participate in the study as it is close to his workplace.  He hopes that his employees will do the same, especially since they can take time off during the work hours to participate in the study.

“We would like to warmly thank Dr Nathan and his colleagues at CHEM for their commitment”, said Prof. Rejko Krüger, head of the Luxembourg Parkinson Study. “We are extremely happy to have CHEM as an influential partner in the South of the country and we are looking forward to working together”. Krüger and his colleagues hope that the social commitment of CHEM can serve as an example for other companies to include NCER-PD in their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes. If there are at least 3 volunteers in one location, the clinical team can organise appointments on the spot, thanks to the Flying Team Mobile.

Anyone unaffected by Parkinson’s can be a healthy control subject for the study; however, the researchers are particularly in need of men over the age of 40 because the majority of patients falls into this age and gender group. So far, around 262 healthy control subjects have been recruited – but 800 are needed in total.
